About the Recital
The Avery-Copp House holds two centuries within its walls. Rufus Avery built it around 1800, when music was something families made at home, and later generations gave it the Victorian rooms visitors see today. In this solo recital, cellist Tom Readett follows that same span through the cello: from music of the house’s first years to the decades between 1890 and 1930, when a teenage Pablo Casals found Bach’s rarely played suites in a Barcelona music shop and changed what the cello could do on stage. Between pieces, Tom shares the stories behind the music and behind his own instrument, a cello made in Milan in 1748 that was already half a century old when the Avery-Copp House was built in 1800.
About the Performer
Tom Readett is a cellist, educator, and arts leader based in New York. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Mystic Chamber Music Series, a nonprofit he launched in 2023 in Mystic, Connecticut, which now reaches more than 10,000 students each year. He is also the founding cellist of Thais Trio, a professional piano trio that tours widely. Tom holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Marion Feldman and Wolfram Koessel, and is completing an EdM at Teachers College, Columbia University, with research in motor learning and music performance. He performs on a 1748 Carlo Antonio Testore cello, on generous loan.
